by Jan Kaulins
ORIOLE THEATER DETROIT photo picture print photograph for sale. This Detroit ORIOLE THEATER photo picture print for sale is of the Linwood Avenue movie theater that was built in 1927 and closed as a movie theater in 1951. It became the home of The New Bethel Baptist Church, where Pastor C. L. Franklin, father of Detroit icon Aretha Franklin, ministered to his congregation for many years. This building also was historical as Pastor Franklin was deeply involved with the Civil Rights Movement marches and protests in the 1960's, and many activists meetings took place in these wall. In 1963, the church helped organize the "Great March to Freedom" (or "Walk Toward Freedom") in downtown Detroit, which drew an estimated 150,000 people. The keynote speaker was Franklin's friend, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
This is a rare photo of The Detroit ORIOLE THEATER. (Please note that the name, web address etc. shown on this web image DO NOT appear on the photo that your purchase.)
