BROWN JUG ANN ARBOR Restaurant Bar photo art print photography for sale. Brown Jug Ann Arbor photograph art prints photo for sale. This is a unique fine art photo portrait of the Ann Arbor Brown Jug awning on this historic eatery and bar. "The Brown Jug has been a part of Ann Arbor and The University of Michigan tradition since 1938.

The Brown Jug is named after the Michigan vs Minnesota football trophy, which is the oldest in college football. The story goes that in 1903 the Michigan wolverines traveled to Minnesota to Play the Golden Gophers.

This was a big game in its day because the Wolverines under Coach Yost had racked up a 28 game winning streak and the Gophers, with the best team they had fielded were hoping to break the streak. After a hard fought battle the game was ended in a 6-6 tie when a thunderstorm rolled in. In the rush to get out of the lightning and rain the Wolverines left their 5 gallon water jug behind. When Yost called to retrieve the Jug, L.J. Cooke, the Minnesota Head Coach replied “you’ll have to win it back”. And so the tradition began…."

ANN ARBOR PHOTO ART PRINT PHOTOGRAPHY FOR SALE. Ann Arbor HDR photo photography art prints photos for sale by artist photographer Mr. Jan Kaulins.

These are original High Dynamic Range (HDR) color photographs created by nationally recognized award winning artist/photographer Jan Kaulins. These HDR photos are the newest artistic images in his most recent series of photography. Each photograph has BEEN CREATED FROM NINE SEPARATE BRACKETED DIGITAL EXPOSURES and then layered together into one photographic image. It is then ‘tone-mapped’ where individual areas of the photo, as well as contrast, saturation and other qualities of the image can be artistically manipulated to bring out the artistic effects that make these photos so visually unique and striking. Some of the photos in this series are even further digitally enhanced for artistic effect giving them an almost painterly or graphic silkscreened look. They do not look like your grandmothers traditional photos. These photos are however not hand-colored, like Jan’s other photographic series shown on this website. This is an entirely new photographic process that is being used to create these unique and vividly colorful Ann Arbor photo art prints.

This is a relatively new photographic technique which uses the blending of NINE BRACKETED DIGITAL EXPOSURES to capture and emulate the way that light levels in the real world vary over an enormous tonal range, from the brightest area of sunlight to the darkest area in the shadows. All of these varying degrees of light cannot be exposed properly and captured in a single photograph---hence the necessity of layering and combining of the multiple over and under exposures to allow the viewer to see all of the existing areas of light at one time in one photo. The enhanced saturation and color of the multiple images also is a partial result of this very unique photographic process and can be quite stunning and dramatic. Sometimes these artistic Jan Kaulins photos blur the sense of reality and illusion. The quality of the Jan Kaulins' photographic prints is much higher than we can show within limits of this web site. Slight tonal changes and blurring around the areas of strong contrast are a result of the JPEG compression process, and are not part of the high quality originals.
